If you remember seeing the movie "School of Rock," then you will get the idea behind Metropolitan Fine Arts Center's Rock Academy. At Rock Academy, musicians are prepared to play in bands (held on the weekends) by helping them to master basic guitar chords and rhythm sequences. Once the musician is able to play basic songs "in-time" and can master about 12 chords, they may be eligible to participate in the Rock University program. Our director, John Dobbs, being in the rock music business for over 35 years, has found the shortest route to preparing musicians to play in bands, and offers a lot of encouragement along the way. Mr. Dobbs also feels that it is important to keep a pace that the musician is comfortable with, and not to rush them into a playing venue too soon, but when the time is just right.

Supportive Environment
At Rock Academy, our teachers provide a supportive learning environment that stresses self esteem and continuous improvement through positive reinforcement and good practicing habits. If you are looking to start your musical journey, check out Rock Academy at the Metropolitan Fine Arts Center in Fairfax Station and Alexandria, Virginia.

Instruments
The Rock Academy program provides training for Guitar (acoustic & electric), Electric Bass, Drums, and Voice (lead and harmony).

Requisites and Ages
To be a part of Rock Academy, you must own an instrument that can be amplified (acoustic/electric or electric). We will teach you the skills that will eventually allow you to take part in the weekend rehearsal and performance program.
The general age requirements for Rock Academy are as follows:
Guitar (acoustic or electric) - 7 years old
Bass Guitar - 8 years old
Drums - 8 years old
Voice - 9 years old

Next Steps
After a musician masters the basic chords and rhythm sequence, they may be eligible to join Rock University, which will guide them in the skills of playing in a real band. The Rock University program rehearses on the weekend, and simulates a "real" band experience. Students are provided a valuable opportunity to develop stage presence and performance skills.

Location
Rock University is located at the Metropolitan Fine Arts Center's two studios.

Fees
All of the Rock Academy private lessons are $37 for each 30-minute lesson, and $70 for a 1-hour lesson. These are billed monthly.
