If you are looking for an innovative contemporary music program that combines private instruction with group band experience, then Metropolitan Fine Arts Center's Rock University is perfect for you. Our director, being in the rock music business for over 35 years, has found there are basically two ways to learn how to play rock music. You can teach yourself, spending many years trying to uncover the secrets of your instrument and the intricacies of performing, or you can have a professional guide you through it with sure fire results! At Rock University, our teachers have spend over twenty years each performing in rock groups and are ready to pass the secrets of their experience on to you, everything from how to play your instrument to which stomp boxes to buy. If you are looking to start your musical journey, or would like to improve on your current one, you owe it to yourself to check out Rock University at the Metropolitan Fine Arts Center in Fairfax Station and Alexandria, VA.
Instruments
The Rock University program provides training for Guitar (acoustic & electric), Electric Bass, Drums, and Voice (lead and harmony).
Requisites and Ages
To be accepted into the Rock University program, you must be able to play basic chord sequences. You must also own an instrument that can be amplified (acoustic/electric or electric). If you are "not there yet" or just starting to play, Rock University has a preparation program called "Rock Academy" that will teach you the skills that will eventually allow you to take part in the weekend rehearsal and performance program. We have found that musicians of 11 and up are best suited for the Rock University program, but students as young as 8 are in the Rock Academy program. Also, even though it's best to own your own amplifier, one can be provided at the rehearsals for a small rental fee.
All Rock University Students are required to continue the Rock Academy Program.
Performing Skills
Singing and performance skills are taught in conjunction with the program. Students are thaught the mechanics of singing lead, singing harmony, and using the microphone. The program is specifically designed to simulate a "real" band experience. Students are provided a valuable opportunity to develop stage presence and performance skills.

Rock University is located at the Metropolitan Fine Arts Center at Fairfax Station.
